Description
It is a well-known fact that climate change impacts women and girls inordinately compared to men. In the case of Small Island Developing States (SIDS), marginalised women from rural and remote parts of the islands are rendered vulnerable, which significantly impacts their economic and social conditions. Although SIDS are translating policy into action by implementing gender-responsive climate policies to address gender considerations, they are still facing several challenges in terms of community engagement, participation of women and youth and integrating gender issues in energy transition programmes.
The need of the hour is to acknowledge that climate targets cannot be achieved in isolation, as they require women as both active participants and decision-makers to tackle the climate crisis. To achieve gender equality, it is pivotal to close the prevailing eco-gender gap, support women-led community- based solutions and remove the barriers to accessing resources and decision-making.
During the event, the speakers will indulge in a panel discussion and explain why it is crucial to discuss gender in the context of SIDS and climate change.
